Firework thrown onto roof ‘could have led to a death’ By Andrew King A FIREWORK thrown onto the roof of a house caused major damage and could have claimed lives. Fire investigator Bruce Irvine is furious about what happened and says it is now time for a public debate over fireworks. The fire started in the guttering of the Becmead Drive, Harewood, property about 10.30pm on Saturday, November 11, and spread into the wall space. The family had just gone to bed and were still awake, said Mr Irvine. About 10min later, the kitchen smoke alarm activated and the family got out of bed. The fire was well involved and had been spread by a ventilation system in the roof space, he said. The father went to the bathroom and burnt his feet on debris that had fallen through the ceiling, he said. Detectives are investigating. Mr Irvine said the fire was so reckless that if someone had died, he would have expected a murder charge to be laid. •Turn to page 5

BRUCE IRVINE has a point on page 1 today. The experienced fire investigator wants a debate on fireworks and when and where they can be used. His example of more controls needed on fireworks is a good one – a family was probably lucky to escape a blaze in their Harewood Rd house. It was caused by someone throwing a firework on the roof, it landed or rolled into the guttering and caught material underneath alight. The blaze spread, fanned by an air ventilator, causing major damage to the ceiling space. Luckily for the family who had just gone to bed, they were awake. Casebrook village to expand SUMMERSET Group has bought more land on Cavendish Rd to add another 71 units to the $100 million Casebrook village which is under construction. The Wellington-based company bought 2.1ha for an undisclosed sum, which it says will expand the village to more than 340 units, a rest-home with hospital level care, and Summerset’s first dementia care centre in Christchurch. “We are seeing strong inquiry for our Casebrook village, which is currently under construction, with the first homes available to move into in March next year,” chief executive Julian Cook said in a statement. Summerset was granted resource consent for the $100m village in 2015, saying at the time the site would offer 237 homes and a 49-bed care centre with rest home and hospital level care. The company has 22 villages completed or in development and another seven sites ready for development. It is targeting 450 new units by the end of the year. Government figures show consents were issued for 1856 retirement village units in the year ended September 30, down from 2037 a year earlier.

SCHOOL SPEED ZONE Breens Intermediate is next on the list to get 40km/h signage outside the school. A city council report said a sign on Breens Rd and Bonita Pl outside the intermediate school “ranks as a priority” and meets the criteria set by the New Zealand Transport Agency. The speed zone will operate from 8.208.50am and 2.55-3.15pm on school days. The signs will cost about $40,000 to install. LIBRARY PARKING Short-term and mobility parking spaces will be put in outside the Bishopdale library after a request from Jane Benton, the city council ‘s facilities leader – libraries. Nine P10 spaces and two P60 mobility spaces will be installed outside the library. The angle of the parks will also change from 70 to 90 degrees to allow easy access from both directions.

First look at the planned St Albans Park upgrades
A FIRST look at the $800,000 upgrade for St Albans Park has been revealed. Sports groups are set to be the main benefactors of the revamp, with work on the new pavilion and turf likely to start before the end of the year. The park has been plagued by drainage issues, which has left the playground flooded, sports fields unusable and park users fed-up. However, the city council has finalised plans for a new drainage system and replacement of the existing turf with a new sand-based surface. Two artificial cricket wickets will also be installed. The old pavilion was knocked down last week so work can begin on a new pavilion which will incorporate two fully accessible public toilets. City council neighbourhood and sports parks operations manager, Al Hardy, said the upgrade of the fields will start at the same time if the weather is right. He said it is difficult to put an exact time frame on when the fields would be ready as the work is weather dependent. The new pavilion will have

Problem-solvers off to United States By Julia Evans THE WORLD’S next innovator may be found among the students attending the Future Problem Solving international conference in the United States next year. Students from Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, St Andrew’s College, Burnside High, Christchurch Girls’ High and St Margaret’s College, as well as pupils from Selwyn House and Cobham Intermediate came away with top prizes at the national Future Problem Solving final. In the senior division, Rangi Ruru’s Lucy Anderson, Emily Davey, Sarah Lawrence and Victoria Park were named national champions. While another Rangi team of Ruby Blake-Manson, Abby Croot, Susanna Davis and Eugene In came third. Rangi’s combined middle and senior team of Leah Albrow, Lucy Anderson, Emily Davey, Robb Eastman Densem, Amelia Kirkness, Sarah Lawrence and Victoria Park came second in the presentation of an action plan. New gym gives back By Julia Evans HELPING YOUTH in Papanui is as simple as going to the gym. Vicki Campbell, a former Kiwi Fern, opened F45 Training in a new building complex on Langdons Rd last week. She’s dedicated her life to helping young people, recently stepping down from a managing role at the community-run youth organisation, Te Ora Hou Otautahi, on Harewood Rd after 15 years. Vicki It was only Campbell natural her new venture would do the same. “I was so nervous on opening day. It was overwhelming. It was like my dream was becoming a reality,” she said. The profits from F45 Training are going straight back to where they are needed most – the community, she said. In terms of how much, Mrs Campbell said that depends on how many members they have. “At this stage, I don’t even take a wage. I pay trainers and parttime staff and the rest goes to the community. But I know that won’t be for long,” she said. The idea came when Mrs

Campbell and her husband Jono, who manages Te Ora Hou, were looking outside of the box for funding. Te Ora Hou’s main supporter, the Papanui-Innes Community Board, received cuts to its money pool this year. “It’s hard having to wait every single year to find out if you have a job for the next 12 months.” Mrs Campbell said any money raised through F45 Training would take a little bit of the pressure off other organisations.

“It’s an opportunity to give back to the community without having to rely on Government funding,” she said. Mr Campbell said a variety of charitable community groups would also be involved, not just Te Ora Hou. He said they wanted to put money back into the whole community. “The plan is in between times, the gym can be used for community access by schools other group.”

Fireworks continue to cause issues By Mark Thomas – fire risk management officer JUST AFTER Guy Fawkes weekend, I left town for a week. On my return, I found heaps of vegetation fires, grass, bushes and trees had been attended. While that’s a sign of the time of year, it’s also disappointing to see how many of them were the result of fireworks. The worst incident occurred on November 11 in Harewood, where a firework thrown on to the roof of a house set the roof on fire. A smoke alarm alerted the occupants but one was still burnt while escaping. If found, the idiot responsible might well face a charge of arson. Because recklessness is now included in the actions that might constitute the crime. And you don’t get much more reckless than this. Going through the week’s fire calls, I almost finished without seeing a single kitchen cooking fire, which is almost unheard of. Until I got to Wednesday

when some people went out from their apartment in Madras St and left a pot on the working stove. The neighbour downstairs smelt smoke and called it in. The occupants just beat the first fire truck in returning and had the job of cleaning up the smoke damage. One week, just maybe, we’ll get through without a single one of these totally preventable incidents. Outside fires are banned. For good reason. A brazier left burning on a deck in Parklands on Wednesday night fell over seemingly after everyone had gone to bed. The deck was destroyed. Also very preventable.

highlights top achievers 2017 Dux of the school Dux of the School and this years’ recipient of the Peter Bryant Memorial Award for 2017 is Justine Lee. Justine came to Burnside High School from Westburn School and before that, Ilam Primary School. Her time at school has included an extremely wide ranging involvement in extracurricular activities, proving herself to be a talented musician with involvement in Big Sing, Senior Chorale and Bel Canto. She has offered her time in School Service as a Year 9 Student Support Prefect, as an International Student Leader and as an Academic Mentor. From an early age she has excelled in mathematical and problem solving tasks. This all-round talent has obviously served her well over her years at Burnside High School as she has accumulated 21 1st placings in subjects since Year 9 and since beginning NCEA in 2015, has earned an Excellence Endorsement in every subject she has studied.

Musician of the Year Ben Johnson has been awarded The Peter Rowe cup for Musicianship for 2017. Ben was named as an Arts Prefect this year and has taken a commanding role in a range of performances including the School Production, Stage Challenge, Orchestra, Senior Chorale, Maelstrom, Magna Voce and the Dance Showcase. He has been a member of the SMP Voice programme for five years.

This is Tsubasa’s 2nd year to be nominated as Sportswoman of the Year. Tsubasa has been part of the Senior Girls Volleyball team since 2015 winning two National Titles. As well as playing, she coached a Junior Girls volleyball team this year.

St Andrew’s students say goodbye at assembly By Julia Evans TEARS OF sadness and tears of joy marked the end of an era for St Andrew’s College year 13 students. The school leavers assembly saw students give their final farewells to the school. Some had been there for more than 13 years. But now they have exams around the corner and university or work about to begin. The school’s heads of college gave their final reflections and leavers were farewelled with music and high fives from their younger counterparts.

PAPANUI High School celebrated its success and named Samantha Smith as dux at its senior prize-giving. Samantha has had a successful year academically, achieving a top ranking in all five of her subjects, including first in biology and statistics and second in chemistry. While she is still yet to sit her NCEA level 3 exams, Samantha gained NCEA level 1 and 2 endorsed with excellence in 2015 and 16. Olivia Mackintosh was named proxime accessit for the year. Future stars shine at CBHS prize-giving Syme’s caps off breakout year with award By Andrew King IT HAS been a year of success for Christchurch Boys’ High’s Rico Syme, capped off by winning the senior rugby player of the year award at the school’s prize-giving. The first-five/fullback started the year off in the school’s seventh XV, a team renowned for having a bit of talent for the first XV to pick from when needed. He was brought into the top squad due to injury and cemented his spot with a 50m dash to break the hearts of St Andrew’s College in the UC Championship. Syme was also one of only five South Islanders included in the New Zealand Schools side and played in the Crusaders under-18 development side. Hours of care in your cupboards MODERN: From the 19th century to now, Mays Rd has a long history in Papanui.
The story of Mays Rd gives insight into early Papanui Papanui Heritage Group chairman Murray Williams writes about the early settlement of Mays Rd in Papanui THE LAND surrounding the settlement of Christchurch was initially sold in 20.2ha rural sections, many of which had been surveyed as rectangular blocks. The adjoining sections 276 and 243 ran in an easterly direction from Papanui Rd. The development of a road which accessed these sections was named after George May, a carrier who was an early resident in the street that first appeared in a local directory in 1890. Early evidence of subdivision of the original rural sections can be noted from advertisements in the Lyttelton Times of May 6, 1882, when a 6ha lot was advertised for lease at an annual rent of ₤71 and described as ideal for dairy farming. In 1880, the arrival of the tram service that ran down Papanui Rd improved links with the growing city of Christchurch. While Mays Rd’s original function was to provide access to farming land, it developed into a popular suburban street which presents an interesting record of changing architectural styles over a period of about 140 years. There are still a few examples of 19th century dwellings and of the more elaborate bay villas of the second decade of the 20th century. The later bungalows of the 1920s and 1930s are complemented by a few examples of the English domestic revival on larger lots. The later decades of the 20th century are also represented, while the most recent changes following the earthquakes are rapidly changing the streetscape.
Mays Rd has historical significance. From 1883, it marked the northern boundary of the St Albans borough (which included the land originally sold as RS 243) until it was absorbed into the city in 1903. RS 276, which also attracted housing after 1880, was administered by the Avon Road Board until 1910, when it came under the control of the new Waimairi County Council until it too became part of the expanding city in 1923. By 1940, Mays Rd had 69 residences in a street that had numbered lots running from 2 to 195, an indication the street was far from fully developed as a suburban area. Today many of its inhabitants still enjoy the space of the generously sized lots as surveyed in the 1880s, but there has also been enough further subdivision to increase the number of households (as defined by the number of letterboxes in the street) to 113. •References: Christine Grant (research on RS 276) and Wises Directories. •The Papanui Heritage Group has a limited number of copies of Timber Town to City Suburb, an illustrated history of Papanui, available for sale. Papanui actor stars in theatre role PAPANUI’S LANCE McBride (right) is working on his PhD, so it’s a wonder he has time to take on a leading role in the Canterbury Repertory production of Arsenic and Old Lace. However, the Canterbury University philosophy student has found the time for one of his other loves – theatre. McBride has been performing in plays around the city for the last 12 years. After graduating from the Hagley Theatre Company in 2005, he moved directly into his first professional production with the performance company, Clinic, and has since maintained an average of at least one show a year – sometimes three. Theatre provides a much needed creative outlet for him to balance against his studies. In spite of the fact he is normally drawn to more serious roles, he has found

STRAWBERRY AND MARSHMALLOW PARFAIT Ingredients
Whole leg of lamb 1-2 tbsp oil Rock salt Freshly ground black pepper 4-5 sprigs fresh rosemary
½ cup Marshmallows, small 350g Sugar 500g Strawberries, hulled 6 Eggs, 4 yolks, 2 whole 2 cups Cream, thick 500g Strawberries, fresh, for garnish
Take the lamb out of the fridge 30min before cooking to allow it to come to room temperature. Preheat the oven to 170 deg C. Place a wire rack in a roasting tray, place the lamb on the rack and brush the meat with the oil and then season with the rock
Directions To prepare the tin, line a narrow terrine mould about 30cm x 10cm with plastic wrap. Set some of the marshmallows along the bottom with some strawberry slices. Place the strawberries in a saucepan with half the sugar. Bring to a gentle simmer over a low heat. The juices will come out, so there is no need to add water. Simmer for no more than 2min, then remove from the heat and mash or purée the mixture. Return it to the pan and set aside.
